Course Description |

Stoicism is the branch of Hellenistic philosophy that focuses on mindfulness, resilience and human flourishing. "Leadership Lessons from Ancient Philosophy for Entrepreneurs and Executives" invites the leaders of tomorrow to explore the modern application of stoic principles in organizations and how stoic philosophy relates to entrepreneurial, managerial, political and social leadership. The course examines how stoic philosophy can help ones in charge make effective decisions and build resilience in times of trial, crisis or hardship. It focuses on how stoic practices can be implemented to help entrepreneurs manage the challenges of starting and growing a business, including coping with failure, managing stress, and making tough decisions. The course aims to teach students how to cultivate and internalize virtues such as courage, wisdom, and justice, which are essential to ethical leadership, and emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in becoming better leaders at work and in life at large. Besides exploring the core texts of Stoic Philosophy from Ancient Greece, such as the writings of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, the course will also examine the works of thought leaders from Ancient China, such as Sun Tzu, Lao Tzu and Confucius. |

Stoacılık, Helenistik felsefenin, farkındalık, dayanıklılık ve insanın gelişimine odaklanan bir dalıdır. "Girişimciler ve Yöneticiler için Antik Felsefeden Çıkarılacak Liderlik Dersleri" yarının liderlerini, kurum ve örgütlerde stoacı ilkelerin nasıl hayata geçirilebileceğini ve bu felsefenin girişimci, kurumsal, siyasi ve sosyal liderlikteki uygulama biçimlerini keşfetmeye davet ediyor. Genel hatlarıyla bu ders, yetki sahibi olanların, kriz anlarında ve de buhran dönemlerinde sakin ve etkili kararlar almalarında stoik düşüncenin rolü konusunu işlemektedir. Girişimcilik özelinde ise, kritik kararlar alma, stres yönetimi ve başarısızlıkla başa çıkma gibi, sıfırdan bir iş kurma ve büyütme süreçlerinde karşılaşılabilecek tüm zorluklarda stoacı ilkelerin nasıl değer katabileceğini incelemektedir. Ders ayrıca öğrencilere etik liderlik için gerekli olan cesaret, bilgelik, metanet ve adalet gibi erdemler üzerinde durmakta ve bu bağlamda işte ve yaşamın geri kalanında daha iyi birer önder olabilmek adına öz-farkındalığın, erdemliliğin ve duygusal zekanın önemini ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu derste Stoacı Felsefe’nin ana metinleri kabul edilen, Seneca, Epictetus ve Marcus Aurelius gibi Helenistik Dönem düşünürlerinin yazıları yanısıra, Sun Tzu, Lao Tzu ve Konfüçyus gibi Antik Çin Uygarlığı düşünce önderlerinin eserleri de incelenmektedir.

Course Learning Outcomes and Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) Explain the history and fundamentals of Stoicism
2) Apply the principles of stoic thinking through analysis of primary texts
3) Explore the ways in which Stoic philosophy is being revived and utilized in daily life in the 21st Century
4) Reconceptualize organizational leadership as an outlet to practice philosophy
5) Discover how the “cardinal virtues” of Stoicism can harmonize an organization’s success in business and its social responsibility
6) Adopt best practices for crisis management at work as an entrepreneur and a manager
7) Comment on the significance of emotional intelligence in intra-organizational and extra-organizational communication
8) Enjoy ancient philosophical texts other than those of the stoics, varying from Sun Tzu.
