Course Description | This course examines the modernization process that started in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, the Atatürk revolution and the establishment of the secular nation-state. The enlightenment movement in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the legacy of the political thought left by the Ottoman intellectuals will be emphasized and the history of modernization as a whole will be introduced to establish cause-effect relationships. The establishment of a new state, a republic that dominates the will of the people, instead of the will of the sultan, reforms in the early Republican era, the basic principles of the Atatürk revolution will be examined. The aim of the course is to provide students with a solid foundation on Turkish political history. | ||||
Course Description in Turkish | Bu ders Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son döneminde başlayan modernleşme sürecini, bu sürecin vardığı Atatürk devrimini ve laik ulus-devletin kuruluşunu inceleyecektir. Osmanlı son dönemindeki aydınlanma hareketinin ve Osmanlı aydınlarının bıraktığı siyasi düşünce mirasının üzerinde durulacak, öğrencilerin modernleşme tarihinin bir bütün olduğunu kavramaları, neden-sonuç ilişkileri kurmaları sağlanmaya çalışılacaktır. Yeni bir devletin, padişah iradesi yerine halk iradesini hakim kılan bir cumhuriyetin kurulma evresi, erken Cumhuriyet dönemindeki reformlar, Atatürk devriminin temel ilkeleri mercek altına alınacaktır.. Dersin amacı öğrencilere Türk siyasi tarihi hakkında sağlam bir temel kazandırmaktır. |

Missing the Midterm: You are expected to be present without exception and to plan any travel around these dates accordingly. The note must say that you were medically unable to take the exam. Provided that proper documents of excuse are presented, a make-up exam will be given for each missed midterm.
