Overall Educational Objective |
To become familiar with the civil engineering program at MEF University and civil engineering profession, to learn the main civil engineering technical areas (sub-disciplines), basic concepts and mini glossary pertaining to traditional technical areas, concepts of engineering ethics, engineering, licensing, work health and safety, public policy, environmental protection and sustainability. |
Course Description |
This course provides an introduction to civil engineering profession and its technical specializations (sub-disciplines). The following topics are covered: Introduction to Civil Engineering Profession & MEF University Civil Engineering Curriculum, SI and US custom unit systems and unit conversions problems, Basic concepts, Mini glossary and Basic engineering problems pertaining to civil engineering technical areas (i.e., construction materials, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resources & hydraulics engineering, construction management), National & International Professional Organizations, Ethics Code & Case Analysis, Professional Licensing, Public Policy, Environmental protection & Sustainability, Health & Safety, Main Constraints of Engineering Design. |

Bu derste inşaat mühendisliği mesleği ve inşaat mühendisliği teknik alanları(alt disiplinleri) ile ilgili tanıtım / giriş bilgileri verilmektedir. Derste şu konu başlıkları işlenmektedir: İnşaat Mühendisliği mesleğine giriş ve MEF Üniversitesi İnşaat mühendisliği programının tanıtımı, SI ve US birim sistemleri ve birim çevrim problemleri, İnşaat mühendisliği teknik alanlarına (Yapı Malzemeleri, Yapı, Geoteknik Mühendisliği, Ulaştırma Mühendisliği, Hidrolik ve Su Kaynakları Mühendisliği, ve Yapı İşletmesi) ait temel kavramlar, mini sözlük ve basit mühendislik problemleri, Ulusal ve uluslararası meslek kuruluşları, İnşaat mühendisliğinde etik kodu ve vaka analizleri, Profesyonel mühendislik lisans sistemi, Kamu politikaları, Çevre koruma ve sürdürülebilirlik, İs sağlığı ve iş güvenliği, İnşaat Mühendisliğinde tasarım kısıtları. |
Course Learning Outcomes and Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) Understand the civil engineering program and its continuous improvement.
2) Identify SI and US custom unit systems and solve conversion problems;
3) Describe civil engineering profession, list & define the main technical areas (sub-disciplines) of civil engineering & the main civil engineering design constraints.
4) Explain key concepts & basic glossary pertaining to main technical areas (sub-disciplines), practice on basic engineering concepts/problems of the technical areas.
5) Recognize the concepts such as workplace health & safety, public policy, environmental protection & sustainability in engineering design.
6) Identify professional organizations, professional licensing, professional & ethical responsibilities of a civil engineer & analyze simple case studies.
7) Function effectively as a member of a group;
8) Organize information about one of the concepts/problems in one of the technical areas of civil engineering.
9) Communicate in both written report & presentation format.
