Overall Educational Objective The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of monetary economics.
Course Description Interest of the public in monetary policy, as well as the problems of the financial system increased substantially since the global and local crises. In addition, Turkey has experienced decades of high inflation, financial instability and a banking crisis in 2001, which hampered the potential growth of the economy. The course starts with simple models of interest rate and exchange rate determination and followed by the institutional and policy aspects of monetary economics, central bank independence to exchange rate regimes, monetary policy options. Second part covers banking sector, function of banks, basics of bank financial statements. Third part analyzes the causes and consequences of financial crises in advanced and emerging market economies.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) understand financial markets and the concept of money
2) comprehend the conduct of monetary policy and interest rate determination
3) acquaint yourself with how financial institutions, capital, and FX markets operate
4) Anticipate how international monetary policies and changes in exchange rates may affect domestic monetary policy
5) Summarize the benefits of a credible central bank
6) Understand banking transactions and related risks
7) Identify the causes and consequences of financial crises
