Overall Educational Objective To understand historical development process of yacht interior design and learn to design a cabin or furniture for yacht interiors.
Course Description The yacht sector that dates back nearly 700 years ago is a field that is affected directly by economic development and cultural changes because of the characteristics of the target group. The rapidly increasing interest in mega yacht sector across the world has an effect on various fields such as textile, fashion and furniture. Therefore, the competition in this sector is increasing and the brands that take designing, technology and brand identity into consideration become prominent all the time. The elective course is structured as two main phases: 1 HISTORICAL & THEORITICAL_ Analysis of Yacht Areas: The historical development process of yacht interior design is aimed to be examined in this section. The change in the perspective on the luxurious yachts, the technological developments and the cultural interaction throughout this development process will be researched. The class is integrated with various materials such as movies, readings, articles and students are expected to make a presentation, start a discussion, research and make an observation on the related topic. The top yacht brands and interior designers in Turkey and abroad will be introduced in this section. Some people from the other occupational groups that take part in the yacht design process will be invited as a speaker, it is intended that the restrictions for interior designers are determined and students comprehend the sector better. 2 TECHNICAL _ Technical Infrastructures of Yachts Areas: In this part, it is aimed that the technical details of boats are understood well. The analysis of types of boats, the features of yacht designs, aesthetic sense, ergonomic rules, economic factors, budget management, maritime law and restrictions will be examined. Different styles will be researched by focusing on the interior space perception and students will be expected to research the crucial points for a project drawing that they should pay attention to. The yacht interior differences will be shown via presentations, sample projects, videos, 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional drawings. It is aimed that students gain experience in the production of boats by organizing field and fair trips and see the working area. After the general information about placement is presented, students are expected to present a cabin or furniture design as a project by using a sketch, material board, concept board, 2D and 3D drawings.
