| Overall Educational Objective | To learn to understand and critically assess social and emotional development, particularly in early childhood, to comprehend and critique the scientific literature on this matter, and to analyze and evaluate published literature based on this scientific understanding. | ||||
| Course Description | This course focuses on social and emotional development, primarily during the early childhood. In this course, we will cover contemporary theories in social-emotional development by reading recent empirical research in the related areas. The course will cover theoretical perspectives, biological foundations of social development, temperament, parenting and attachment, self-concept, emotion understanding and emotion regulation, social competence, social cognition, and contexts of social development. | ||||
| Course Description in Turkish | Bu ders, özellikle yaşamın erken çocukluk dönemindeki sosyal ve duygusal gelişime odaklanır. Bu derste, ilgili alanlardaki güncel ampirik araştırmalar ve derleme makaleler okunarak sosyal-duygusal gelişimdeki çağdaş teoriler ele alınmaktadır. Derste teorik perspektifler, sosyal gelişimin biyolojik temelleri, mizaç, ebeveynlik ve bağlanma, benlik kavramı, duygu anlama ve duygu düzenleme, sosyal yeterlilik, sosyal biliş ve sosyal gelişim bağlamları kapsanacaktır. |

| Teaching Methods | This is a discussion-based course that requires the active participation of the students. Each week, the students will be assigned review papers and/or scientific articles to read and/or videos to watch as pre-class activity. These learning materials will be posted online. The students will be required to come up with discussion questions based on their pre-class activity and send them to the instructor before the class. The article will be discussed via the instructor's leading prompts that were specified in light of the students' discussion questions. The students will write a one- or two-paragraph reflection as an answer to the one of the questions that is picked among the students' discussion questions before the class discussion begins. | ||||||||||||||||||
