| Course Description | Course Description The broad aim of this course is to explore how language functions as evidence in legal investigations—and how the tools used to analyze that evidence are evolving in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). From the disputed authorship of suicide notes to anonymous threats made by terrorists, from emojis that carry hidden meanings to ambiguous language that seals a death sentence, from speech recordings that reveal intoxication to traces of plagiarism that destroy political careers, the course asks: What can language reveal about guilt or innocence? And what happens when machines join the investigation? This course examines real cases where language is central to questions of meaning, intent, and credibility. Each case is treated as a site of interpretation—where linguistic analysis can shape legal outcomes and expose the human stakes behind the evidence. Lessons unfold in two parts: first, a case is analyzed using traditional forensic methods; then, the same evidence is reconsidered through the lens of AI. The course explores both general-purpose tools—such as language models and plagiarism detectors—and specialized forensic applications. This side-by-side approach highlights not only what AI might detect or miss, but how its use could reshape investigations and influence the pursuit of justice. Toward the end of the course, the focus shifts to emerging challenges in which AI itself produces the contested evidence—cases involving deepfakes, voice cloning, and synthetic media that test the boundaries of authorship and authenticity. The course culminates in a final project in which learners act as advisors to the National Law Society. Revisiting a real case, they assess how AI tools could have contributed—or complicated—the investigation and propose ethical recommendations for their use in forensic practice. By combining real-world cases with structured analysis and emerging technologies, the course develops learners’ ability to think critically about how language is used—and contested—as evidence. By examining how AI tools are built and applied in forensic contexts, it builds a strong foundation in AI literacy rooted in ethical reflection and conceptual understanding. It equips learners to engage thoughtfully with the evolving relationship between language, technology, and human judgment in an AI-driven world. |
Course Learning Outcomes and CompetencesUpon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:1) Gerçek hukuk davalarında dilin adli kanıt olarak nasıl işlev gördüğünü ve nihai kararı nasıl etkilediğini açıklar. 2) AI araçlarının adli bağlamlarda dili nasıl işlediğini araştırır ve bu süreci görsel bir temsil veya diyagramla açıklar. 3) AI destekli yöntemlerin geleneksel dilbilimsel analizle çözülen hukuk davalarına nasıl uygulanabileceğini değerlendirir ve AI`nın ortaya çıkarabileceği veya gözden kaçırabileceği hususları vurgular. 4) Önyargı, şeffaflık ve hesap verebilirlik gibi konular da dahil olmak üzere, adli analizde AI kullanımına ilişkin etik riskleri değerlendirir. 5) AI`nın etik etkileri ve risklerini göz önünde bulundurarak, adli soruşturmalarda AI`nın kullanımı veya kullanılmaması için mantıklı önerilerde bulunur. |

| Teaching Methods | This course uses a flipped learning model to support active, student-centered engagement. Students prepare before class by working through readings, videos, and other materials, with short quizzes to reinforce understanding. Class time is dedicated to examining real legal cases, exploring how language was used as evidence, and discussing how AI tools might influence interpretation and outcomes. Assessment is integrated throughout the course, including weekly quizzes, interactive in-class tasks, and a final project where students investigate how AI could be applied to a real forensic case and present their findings to a panel. | |||||||||||||||

Attendance and Participation Regular attendance and active participation are essential for success in this course. Because many assessments take place during class, students are expected to: – Attend at least 70% of sessions – Complete at least 70% of in-class activities Students who do not meet these minimum requirements will not be able to successfully complete the course. 2. Pre-Class Preparation Students are expected to complete assigned readings and videos available on Blackboard before each session. These materials provide essential background and prepare students for in-class activities and discussions. 3. In-Class Assessments There are 10 graded in-class activities during the semester. If a student misses an activity and provides valid documentation (e.g., illness), they may be allowed to complete the activity at a later date. If rescheduling is not possible, the grade will be adjusted based on the average of the other completed in-class assessments. Without valid documentation, a grade of zero will be assigned for the missed activity. 4. Final Project The final project is a required component of the course. All students must submit the final project to pass the course. If the project is not submitted, the course cannot be completed, regardless of performance in other assessments. 5. Use of AI Tools AI tools will be used in this course; however, their use is restricted in certain contexts. Students must follow the instructor’s guidelines regarding when and how AI tools may be used. Unauthorized use of AI tools will be treated as plagiarism and is subject to disciplinary action under Article 54 of the Law on Higher Education. Students should seek clarification before using AI tools if they are unsure whether use is permitted. 6.
