| Course Description | This course studies words by examining their form, meaning and use in a variety of linguistic contexts. Lexicology, as a branch of linguistics, plays a crucial role in understanding how words develop, adapt and contribute to the richness of human communication. This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts and recent developments in the field of English lexicology and lexical semantics. The focus will be on words with many meanings, synonyms and idiomatic units. |
Course Learning Outcomes and CompetencesUpon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:1) demonstrate their acquisition of lexicon-phraseological knowledge by correctly utilizing relevant terminology in written and spoken communication. 2) evaluate and synthesize theoretical concepts in English lexicology through critical analysis of scholarly literature and discussion. 3) apply theoretical concepts from lexicology to practical issues in lexicography through the creation of annotated dictionaries or glossaries. 4) differentiate and categorize key notions within basic categories of lexicology, such as the distinctions between homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms, through comparison exercises and written analysis. |

Attendance is required for 70% of the course session, if you exceed this you may fail by F or FX.
