| Course Description | The primary objective of this course is to introduce graduate students to a number of existing and emerging threats to international security and stability in the 21st Century. In that context, dangers associated with the proliferation of nuclear weapons and their delivery vehicles, such as ballistic missiles; the current status of the nuclear non-proliferation regime and the NPT; the military and political implications of Iran’s nuclear program for the Middle East; India’s and Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities and the arms race in the Sub-Continent; North Korea’s nuclearization and its implications for regional security in the Far East; safety and security problems that arise in connection with the nuclear arsenals in the former Soviet republics; illegal trafficking of nuclear material, know-how and technology used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons; and the possibility of unauthorized seizure of such material by terrorist groups and their possible implications for nuclear security will constitute the main themes of the course. | ||||
| Course Description in Turkish | Dersin temel amacı, uluslararası güvenlik ve strateji alanında öne çıkan konuların geçmişten günümüze gelişim süreçlerini ve günümüzdeki etkilerini incelemek, geleceğe yönelik öngörülerde bulunabilecek analizler yapmaktır. Bu çerçevede, 20. Yüzyıl’da iki Dünya Savaşı sonrasında oluşan uluslararası sistemde uluslararası örgütlerin rolü; Soğuk Savaş dönemi ve iki kutuplu sistemde silahlanma yarışı; kitle imha silahlarının (KİS) yayılması sorununun gelişimi; Sovyetler Birliği’nin dağılması sonrasında Orta Asya ve Kafkasya’da yaşanan güvenlik sorunları; Rusya Federasyonu’nun tepkisel politikaları; 11 Eylül saldırıları sonrası dönemde güvenlik konularında değişen öncelikler ve küresel terörizmle mücadele yöntemleri; AB’nin güvenlik politikaları; Arap Baharı ile başlayan gelişmelerin Ortadoğu bölgesine etkileri; bilim ve teknolojinin gelişmesiyle ortaya çıkan yeni tehditler gibi konular ele alınacaktır. |

| Teaching Methods | The course consists of lectures by the faculty member and students' assignments for writing Op-Eds and book reviews and presenting them in class. Derse katılım, öğrencinin dönem sonu notunun %20’ni teşkil eder; • Öğrenciler, tümüyle kendi çalışmaları olması gereken ve konusunu dersin Öğretim Üyesine danışarak kendilerinin saptayacağı 800-1,200 kelime uzunluğunda iki düşünce yazısı (“Op-Ed”) yazmaları gerekmektedir.
