Overall Educational Objective Students will acquire a basic knowledge on concept and types of migrations. The course will enable them to develop their own perspective on the same issue, while also understanding contemporary trends concerning the refugees and asylum seekers protection on global and regional level.
Course Description This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge for critical thinking on migrations and refugee law and policies. Starting with introductory classes on the conceptual development of migrations, its types, and history, it then zooms in the concept of the international protection and examines the international and regional legal documents concerning migrants and refugee protection, providing students with their legal interpretation and analysis. Subsequently, it offers a critical analysis of the protection approaches in Europe and globally, discussing reception, integration, and repatriation policies of receiving countries. Special attention is given to the ongoing legal reforms in this area in the EU, the case law of the European Court of Human Rights related to immigration and the problem of migration by the sea. The problems migrants and refugees face in the destination countries are analyzed, and finally, future prospects of migration trends are discussed.
