| Overall Educational Objective | To learn about the founding and history of the Republic of Turkey and Turkish political history. | ||||
| Course Description | This course has been prepared to provide historical information about the establishment and history of the Republic of Turkey. The aim of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation on Turkish political history. In order to achieve this aim, the course will first examine the modernization process that started in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire. It will focus on issues such as the problems in the Ottoman Empire, especially in its last periods, the solutions to the problems, innovation in administrative and legal fields, modernization efforts, and the legacy of political thought left by the intellectuals of the period. Then, the developments especially in the last century of the Ottoman Empire, the establishment of the New Republic of Turkey (secular-nation-state) and the basic principles of Ataturk`s revolution will be examined. By following this process, students will learn to establish cause and effect relationships on historical events, follow the intellectual steps that made it possible to move from the will of the sultan to the will of the sovereign people, and gain detailed knowledge of the basic principles of Ataturk`s revolution. |
Course Learning Outcomes and CompetencesUpon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:1) Establishes cause-and-effect relationships regarding the historical events covered in class. 2) It grasps the intellectual steps that made it possible to transition from the sovereign will of the sultan to the sovereign will of the people. 3) Detailed knowledge is gained on the fundamental principles of the Atatürk Revolution. |
