Overall Educational Objective To acquire the knowledge of the international and regional human rights systems and the relevant monitoring bodies, exploring their structure, functioning and procedures.
Course Description This course aims to acquaint the students with the instruments and mechanisms of international human rights protection, incuding the UN, European, Inter-American and African systems. In an introductory class, we will examine the historical development of international human rights regime after the Second World War. Students will then explore the UN human rights protection system, including treaty-based and charter-based monitoring bodies. Finally, the functioning and impact of the regional human rights mechanisms will be examined, namely the Council of Europe, the Inter-American and the African human rights systems.
Course Description in Turkish Bu ders öğrencilere Birleşmiş Milletler, Avrupa Konseyi, Amerikan Devletleri Örgütü ve Afrika Birliği dahil olmak üzere uluslararası insan hakları koruma sistemleri hakkında bilgi vermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Giriş dersinde, İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında uluslararası insan hakları rejiminin doğuşu ve tarihsel gelişimi incelenecektir. Daha sonra Birleşmiş Milletler sistemi içinde sözleşme temelli ve şart temelli insan hakları denetim mekanizmaları incelenecektir. Son olarak, Avrupa İnsan Hakları Sözleşmesi, Amerikan İnsan Hakları Sözleşmesi ve Afrika İnsan ve Halkların Sözleşmesi’ne dayalı denetim mekanizmaları ele alınacaktır.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) know and assess the effectiveness of UN human rights instruments.
2) comprehend the basic structure and functioning of the UN human rights structure; including treaty-based and charter-based mechanisms.
3) know and assess the effectiveness of Council of Europe instruments, particulary the European Convention on Human Rights.
4) understand the structure, role and functioning of the Inter-American and African system of protection.
5) critically analyze the interaction of different human rights systems.

11) Ability to formulate critical hypotheses based on psychological theory and literature, and design studies to test those hypotheses.
