Course Description | This course focuses on cinema as a unique medium of storytelling and closely examines the stylistic techniques applied in films. Exploring the basic principles of cinematic language, the course introduces the functioning of diverse audio-visual components of film week by week in detail and with reference to short extracts from various films. It then focuses on the categories of ‘genre films’, ‘documentary films’, ‘auteur cinema’, and ‘experimental cinema’, and analyses how diverse components of film language function in these examples. | |||||
Course Description in Turkish | Sinemayı kendine özgü anlatım teknikleri olan bir mecra olarak ele alan bu ders, filmlerde kullanılan teknik öğeleri ayrıntılı olarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Film dilinin temel prensiplerinin tanıtıldığı bu derste öğrenciler her hafta çeşitli filmlerden fragmanlar eşliğinde, farklı görsel-işitsel öğelerin filmlerin anlam ve duygu dünyasında nasıl işlev gördüğünü tartışacaklardır. Dersin ilerleyen haftalarında ‘tür filmleri’, ‘belgesel sinema’, ‘yönetmen sineması’, ‘deneysel sinema’ gibi film kategorilerine odaklanılarak film dilinin farklı öğelerinin bu örneklerde nasıl işlev kazandığına odaklanılacaktır. |

Teaching Methods | This course will be taught in the flipped format. Students will be expected to watch the designated film of the week prior to that week’s class. I will give them some questions beforehand in order to guide them through the film viewing process. During the class time, they will discuss their interpretation of the film based on their answers to the given questions. I will also show them various fragments from different movies and ask them to discuss the function of certain stylistic elements within these scenes. | |||||||||||||||
