Overall Educational Objective Students will learn basic concepts and case law on international criminal law.
Course Description The course aims to give students a basic understanding of conventional and customary international criminal law. In the first part of the course, the history of international criminal tribunals, universal jurisdiction and general principles of international criminal law shall be examined. Then, core international crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression shall be explored in depth. Later, mens rea, defences in international criminal law, and modes of liability shall be explained. The last part of the course shall concern methods of international legal cooperation in criminal investigation and procedure, as well as extradition and surrender.
Course Description in Turkish Bu ders, öğrencilere sözleşmesel ve teamüle dayanan uluslararası ceza hukuku hakkında temel bir anlayış kazandırmayı amaçlamaktadır Dersin ilk bölümünde, uluslararası ceza mahkemelerinin tarihçesi, evrensel yargı yetkisi ve uluslararası ceza hukukunun genel ilkeleri incelenecektir. Daha sonra, temel uluslararası suçlar, soykırım, insanlığa karşı suçlar, savaş suçları ve saldırı suçu derinlemesine irdelenecektir. Bunun ardından manevi unsur, uluslararası ceza hukukunda sorumluluğu azaltan ve kaldıran haller ile faillik ve sorumluluk biçimleri açıklanacaktır. Dersin son kısmı, cezai soruşturma ve yargılama usuli ile uluslararası hukuki işbirliği yöntemlerinin yanı sıra iade ve teslim etme ile ilgili olacaktır.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) Identify the basic principles of international criminal law.
2) Distinguish between the various forms of international bodies dealing with international criminal law.
3) Comment on the effectiveness of international jurisdiction of national and international tribunals.
4) Determine the material and mental elements of core international crimes.
5) Understand and comment on the case-law of various international tribunals.
6) Solve complex case studies related to international criminal law.
7) Formulate legal arguments regarding current issues in international criminal law.
8) Develop a global perspective on the role of international criminal law in promoting justice, accountability, and human rights.

10) Recognition for the need for, and the skills to pursue, lifelong learning, inquiry, and self-improvement.
11) Ability to formulate critical hypotheses based on psychological theory and literature, and design studies to test those hypotheses.
12) Ability to acquire knowledge independently, and to plan one’s own learning.
13) Demonstration of advanced competence in the clarity and composition of written work and presentations.
