Overall Educational Objective To learn the key approaches in textual film analysis, to understand the elements of film form, to become familiar with different film genres and their specific stylistic principles, and to be able to write critical film essays
Course Description This course focuses on cinema as a unique medium of storytelling and closely examines the stylistic techniques applied in films. Exploring the basic principles of cinematic language, the course introduces the functioning of diverse audio-visual components of film week by week in detail and with reference to short extracts from various films. It then focuses on the categories of ‘genre films’, ‘documentary films’, ‘auteur cinema’, and ‘experimental cinema’, and analyses how diverse components of film language function in these examples.
