Overall Educational Objective | To learn the key approaches in film analysis, develop an interdisciplinary approach in analyzing films, to become familiar with the representation of memory in different filmmaking styles across the world, and to learn to write critical film reviews. | ||||
Course Description | What is the relationship between film and memory? How does memory become cinematic? Film as a medium that captures and replicates time has always been regarded as a suitable art form for representing memory. This course focuses on various films that tackle personal, cultural, national and historical aspects of remembering and forgetting. Whether they tell stories of characters suffering from memory loss or, stories of societies willing to forget some unpleasant moments in their history, the relationship between memory and identity is at the heart of all these narratives. By analysing one film in detail every week, the course aims to introduce different styles of filmmaking across the world and demonstrate diverse examples of how memory is dramatized in cinema. | ||||
Course Description in Turkish | Sinema ile bellek arasındaki ilişkiyi nasıl tanımlayabiliriz? Bellek, sinemanın diline nasıl tercüme edilebilir? Bu ders, hatırlama ve unutma mekanizmalarının bireysel, kültürel ulusal ve tarihsel boyutlarıyla ilgilenen farklı filmlere odaklanacaktır. İster hafıza kaybı yaşayan karakterlerin hikâyesini anlatsınlar, ister geçmişlerindeki rahatsız edici birtakım olayları unutmak isteyen toplumların hikâyelerini, bütün bu filmlerin merkezinde bellek ile kimlik arasındaki ilişki vardır. Bu derste dönem boyunca her hafta bir film ayrıntılı olarak analiz edilecek, böylece çeşitli ülkelerden farklı sinema anlayışları tanıtılacak ve belleği sinemada temsil etmenin farklı örnekleri incelenecektir. |

Teaching Methods | This course will be taught in the flipped format. Students will be expected to watch the designated film of the week prior to that week’s class. I will give them some questions beforehand in order to guide them through the film viewing process. During the class time, they will discuss their interpretation of the film based on their answers to the given questions. | ||||||||||||
