Overall Educational Objective To learn what qualitative research in psychology means and how it differs from quantitative research, to learn to collect qualitative data and approach the data with a qualitative approach, and to become familiar with qualitative research methods frequently used in psychology.
Course Description This course aims to introduce the students what qualitative research design and data collection entail in psychology. Students are introduced to using techniques of observation and interviews to collect qualitative data and qualitative methodologies such as thematic analysis, grounded theory methodology, phenomenological methods, discursive psychology and discourse analysis. Students will be introduced how qualitative data is analysed in accordance with each methodology.
Course Description in Turkish Bu dersin amacı, öğrencilere psikoloji bilimi bağlamında nitel araştırma desenleri ve veri toplama biçimlerini tanıtmaktır. Öğrencilere nitel veri toplama kullanma teknikleri olan gözlem ve görüşme teknikleri ve tematik analiz, gömülü teori, fenomenolojik araştırma, söylemsel psikoloji ve söylem analizi gibi nitel metodolojiler tanıtılacak ve her metodoloji bağlamında nitel verinin nasıl analiz edildiği aktarılacaktır.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) understand what qualitative research means;
2) evaluate the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods;
3) collect qualitative data;
4) demonstrate basic knowledge about different qualitative methods;
5) analyse qualitative data on a basic level.

10) Recognition for the need for, and the skills to pursue, lifelong learning, inquiry, and self-improvement.
11) Ability to formulate critical hypotheses based on psychological theory and literature, and design studies to test those hypotheses.
12) Ability to acquire knowledge independently, and to plan one’s own learning.
13) Demonstration of advanced competence in the clarity and composition of written work and presentations.

Teaching MethodsThis course will be taught entirely in the lecture format. Students will be asked to collect their own data and be involved in data analysis during class. When different methologies are introduced the students will work on data provided by the instructor in pairs. For each methodology, the students will be required to discuss published articles in English in terms of research design and data collection.
Homework and ProjectsStudents will be asked to prepare and present their own qualitative research proposal. Their proposals will be evaluated by other students as well as the instructor.
