Overall Educational Objective To develop a critical point of view in regards to how art, popular culture and psychology are connected in the world we live in.
Course Description The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the general issues and debates within the study of Western art history. The course leans towards the idea of a visual culture with an emphasis on how art and popular culture intermingle today. At the end of the course, students will comprehend the concepts of artist, art work and history of visual and contemporary arts in detail. They will able to analyze and write about art history critically.
Course Description in Turkish Bu dersin amacı 20.yy Görsel Sanatlarda Akımlarına giriş, 1945’ten günümüze görsel sanatlardaki temel kavramların incelenmesidir. Ders sanat ve popular kültürün nasıl iç içe geçtiği üzerinde durarak görsel kültür fikrine odaklanır. Desin sonunda, öğrenciler sanatçı, sanat eseri kavramlarını öğrenecek ve görsel ve çağdaş sanat tarihini detaylı olarak kavrayacaklardır. Sanat tarihi üzerine analiz yapabilecek ve eleştirel yazılar yazabileceklerdir.

1) understand the close relationship between artist, art work, critic and art collector;
2) analyze the relation between cultural professionals (those who work for museums, art institutions, festivals, and so on) and possible issues they can face;
3) know the history of Visual and contemporary Arts in detail;
4) interpret different ways to connect Visual Arts in regards to field of Psychology;
5) write about art history and the art world critically;
6) connect historical events, and the movements in contemporary culture.

Teaching MethodsStudents are expected to do the readings every week. Each week there will be a quiz on the readings. Followed by an hour of lecture. Afterwards there will be an in class discussion. Students are expected to follow the art news, as well as cinema, concerts and theatre. The goal is to accumulate tools of critical thinking in understanding arts, so that it will benefit the students' works in psychology.

Attendance at all classes is mandatory. Students arriving late or unprepared will be barred from that class, which will impact upon their continuous assessment grade. Students must provide a legitimate, acceptable and documented excuse for missing a scheduled exam. There will be a make-up exam if students miss the midterm. Make-up exams could be in a different format than midterm or final exam. Late paper submission results in losing ten points. You can miss 3 classes maximum without permission. Requirements & Expectations *It is essential for you to do the assigned reading before class; so that we would not waste our time by getting you acquainted with the terminology of that reading. *You are expected to come to class on time, please be considerate about punctuality. After 10 minutes, you will not be accepted in the classroom. *Exams: You are responsible for all the materials discussed in the class together with the assigned chapters from the book. You are responsible for all the materials covered in the chapters even if they were not mentioned in the class. *Please submit all your written assignments as hard copy unless it is asked in soft copy. *As a matter of courtesy to your classmates and the instructor, please turn off your mobile phones, pads and any electronic devices that make noise. *You may drink but not eat in the classroom. *Ethic problems (cheating, plagiarism…etc) will not be tolerated in this course. *Final will be cumulative; you are responsible for all the materials covered in the class (book + class discussions) from the beginning of the semester. *It is your responsibility to follow the requirements and schedule of assignments. I will explain them in class but not respond to emails about content and schedule that I explained in class. *I will go over my email policy in the first class, too. *This class also aims to develop the skills of empathy and non-judgementality. It is important that we are aware of the way we approach each other. Insulting each other is not acceptable. We will all do our best to not react in judgmental ways.
