Overall Educational Objective This course aims to introduce students to the scientific study of human memory with a focus on its operation in the social context.
Course Description This course introduces the study of memory in the social context with a psychological methodology. Students will first learn about the basics of human memory, i.e., its subsystems, its mechanisms, its neuroscientific basis etc. Later, the focus of the course will shift to the social influences on memory. There will be two main lines of research that the course will cover: 1. How remembering within groups that are as small as couples and as big as societies affect human memory, 2. How individuals remember the past of their groups. The main concepts, studies, and findings in these two lines of research will be reviewed. Students will not only learn about remembering the past but also imagining the future for both individuals and collectives, which is an integral aspect of the memory system.
Course Description in Turkish Bu ders, psikoloji metodolojisiyle belleğin sosyal bağlamda nasıl incelendiğini öğrencilere tanıtmaktadır. İlk olarak, öğrenciler insan belleğinin temellerini, yani alt sistemlerini, mekanizmalarını, nörobilimsel temellerini vb. öğreneceklerdir. Daha sonra dersin odak noktası belleğin üzerindeki sosyal etkiler olacaktır. Ders kapsamında iki ana araştırma hattı ele alınacaktır: 1. Çiftlerden toplumlara kadar küçük ve büyük gruplar içinde hatırlamanın insan belleğini nasıl etkilediği, 2. Bireylerin kendi gruplarının geçmişini nasıl hatırladığı. Bu iki araştırma hattındaki temel kavramlar, çalışmalar ve bulgular gözden geçirilecektir. Öğrenciler, yalnızca geçmişi hatırlamayı değil, aynı zamanda hem bireyler hem de topluluklar için geleceği hayal etmeyi de öğreneceklerdir; bu, bellek sisteminin ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) Learn how human memory operates within the social context.
2) Understand the distinct memory systems and their interaction with the social world.
3) Grasp how society influences and structures human memory while at the same time being structured by it.
4) Connect various areas that focus on the topic of memory within psychology and between other disciplines of social science.
5) Critically evaluate research articles, identify key topics, and develop informed discussion questions on the issues at hand.
6) Propose a research project as a group that explores a topic on the operation of memory in society.

11) Ability to formulate critical hypotheses based on psychological theory and literature, and design studies to test those hypotheses.
12) Ability to acquire knowledge independently, and to plan one’s own learning.
13) Demonstration of advanced competence in the clarity and composition of written work and presentations.
