Overall Educational Objective To understand the nature and the status Turkey’s relations with other countries and international organizations since the creation of the Republic to the present day.
Course Description This course will cover Turkey’s relations with other countries as well as leading international organizations since the creation of the Republic to the present day. Emphasis will be placed on the nature and the conduct of relations with the allies and the neighboring regions, such as the Middle East, Eurasia and Western Europe.
Course Description in Turkish Bu ders Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin, kuruluşundan günümüze kadar geçen sürede, diğer ülkelerle ve önde gelen uluslararası örgütlerle olan ilişkilerini ele almaktadır. Derste, Türkiye’nin müttefikleri ve Ortadoğu, Avrasya ve Batı Avrupa gibi hemen yakınındaki bölge ülkeleriyle olan ilişkilerinin nasıl sürdürüldüğüne ağırlık verilecektir.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:
1) 1. Türkiye'nin diğer ülkelerle ve uluslararası kuruluşlarla ilişkilerindeki önemli olayların kronolojisini bilir;
2) Türk dış politikasına yön veren temel ilkeleri anlar;
3) Farklı dönemlerde Türkiye'nin dış politika davranışını etkileyen faktörleri analiz edebilir (örneğin, iki savaş arası dönem, Soğuk Savaş dönemi, Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönem
4) Farklı hükümetler döneminde Türk dış politikasındaki değişimin ve sürekliliğin nedenlerini kavrayabilir;

2) Understanding of the fundamental concepts that exist in the fields of social and behavioral sciences as well as the correlation between these concepts
3) Ability to analyze the fundamental theories in the field Political Science and International Relations and to assess their reflections into practice
4) Ability to critically discuss different aspects of theories and developments in Political Science and International Relations both individually and in the course of group work during classroom discussions.
5) Ability to conduct research independently, or with a team, about the developments taking place in the international arena, make foreign policy analyses, develop research-based conflict resolution models, and prepare comprehensive reports using computers and relevant software
6) Ability to take decisions as well as to implement these decisions by using the knowledge about the field and the skills that have been acquired during the undergraduate studies
7) Ability to recognize the relations between scientific thought and ethical behavior; pay attention to being tolerant and properly defend different ideas, ideologies and belief systems
8) Ability to work in international institutions and multicultural environments, with the help of the knowledge on different cultures, societies, political systems as well as linguistic skills acquired during the undergraduate studies
9) Ability to display language skills in English at minimum B2 level enough for debating with colleagues on issues of Political Science and International Relations, and also display language skills in a second foreign language at minimum A2 level enough for communicating in daily life
10) Ability to pursue lifelong learning as well as perform advanced/graduate studies in the field Political Science and International Relations and other social sciences disciplines in academic institutions at home and abroad

Required/Recommended ReadingsThe reading material consists of mainly a reference book co-authored by the instructor and a supplementary book, both of which carry ample information about the fundamental issues that will be covered during the class discussions throughout the semester. Therefore, each student is expected to have an original copy of the following books: ...Mustafa Kibaroğlu and Ayşegül Kibaroğlu, Global Security Watch Turkey: A Reference Handbook, Praeger Security International, Westport, Connecticut, USA, 2009; ...William Hale, Turkish Foreign Policy Since 1774, 3rd Edition, Routledge, London & New York, 2013; Students will also be expected to read articles published in Turkish academic journals, such as Insight Turkey, New Perspectives on Turkey, Turkish Foreign Policy, Turkish Policy Quarterly, Alternatives and the like as well as foreign journals and magazines, such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Middle East Journal, The Economist, TIME and Newsweek. It is also strongly recommended to follow daily papers, such as Hürriyet Daily News and International Herald Tribune and watch TV channels, such as CNN International and BBC World or other such media outlets of their choice in order to be able to keep abreast with the world events that may have implications for Turkey’s foreign policy.
Teaching MethodsLectures as well as the reading material to be assigned/suggested by Prof. Kibaroğlu will constitute the main source of information for the students, who will also be asked to suggest articles for reading, if they wish to do so, to be discussed and debated in the classroom.
