| Overall Educational Objective | To learn to understand sociological, cultural and political readings of architectural space and the art work. | ||||
| Course Description | The formation of the built-environment and the production of art have turned into a spectacle, defined only by the market value of the end-product. However, when the design of space and artistic practice are conducted with a critical eye, they do have the potential to become tools to understand and transform the conditions they exist in. Throughout the term, works from and currents in architecture and art history will be examined; and the necessary theoretical background will be formed through the screening of films, readings, exhibition visits, the observation of contemporary examples and presentations by architect/artist guests. The process will be supported by video, installation and design practices on a current issue that will be defined in the term. | ||||
| Course Description in Turkish | Yapılı çevrenin oluşma biçimi ve sanatın üretimi, sadece sonuç ürünün pazar değeri üzerinden tanımlanan bir gösteriye dönüşmüş durumda. Oysa mekan tasarımı ve sanata dair pratikler eleştirel bir bakışla ele alındığında, bulundukları koşulları anlamanın ve dönüştürmenin araçları olma potansiyelini taşırlar. Dönem boyunca mimarlık ve sanat tarihinde bu bağlamda yer almış yapıtlar ve akımlar incelenecek; gerekli teorik altyapı, filmler, okumalar, sergi gezileri, güncel örnekler ve mimar/sanatçı konuk sunumlarının desteğiyle oluşturulacaktır. |
Course Learning Outcomes and CompetencesUpon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to:1) analyze architectural and art works and thoughts through politics, sociological and cultural conditions; 2) apprehend a critical stance of architectural and art works, and design skills through the study of site specific art projects; 3) understand the theoretical texts and currents about the relationship between social transformations, architecture and art. |
