Overall Educational Objective To learn and understand strategic importance of Information Systems, e-businesses, applications and models for the use of IS as a competitive strategy in different organizations.
Course Description IS (information systems) has been concern of companies with the advancement of technology. As internet penetration increased and technology advanced the way of business is conducted have changed tremendously. Information Systems and digitization are fundamentally shifting the competitive landscape in many sectors. The course will cover several subjects such as IS management, Value Driven IS, alignment between business processes and IS strategy, e-business value, innovation with IS, ethics and data value to understand the strategic importance of IS management in organizations.
Course Description in Turkish Teknoloji ve iletişim sistemlerinin çok hızlı gelişmesi ile Bilişim sistemleri (BS) şirketlerin önemli bir gündemi haline geldi. Internet penetrasyonun artışı ve teknolojilerin gelişimi ile iş yapma şekli büyük ölçüde değişti. Bilgi sistemleri ve dijitalleşme, bir çok sektördeki rekabet ortamını temelden değiştiriyor. Dersimiz organizasyonlardaki BS yönetiminin stratejik önemini anlamak için BS yönetimi, değere dayalı BS, iş süreçleri ile BS stratejisi arasındaki uyum, elektronik işlerin değeri, BS ile yenilik, etik ve veri değeri gibi çeşitli konuları kapsayacaktır.

1) Bilgi Sistemlerinin iş süreçlerini nasıl mümkün kıldığına dair bütünsel bir bakış açısını kavramak
2) Organizasyonlarda BS stratejisinin temellerini anlamak
3) BS/Bİ'in stratejik yönetim üzerindeki etkilerini, iş süreçleri ile IS süreçleri arasında uyumun nasıl sağlanacağını açıklayın
4) BS ve e-işletmelerin yönlendirdiği değer hakkındaki temel kavramları analiz edin ve BS ile yeniliği açıklamak
5) Bilgi Sistemleri ve verinin değeri ile ilgili temel etik sorunları belirlemek

(Author) and Blakey, P. Every student will be required to have the book and the access code to be able to follow the course properly.
Teaching MethodsThis course is designed to provide students with an exposure to several business processes and practices to create or achieve strategic advantages from IS/IT in strategic information systems era. For achieving learning objectives, the course will entail a set of related videos, readings, lectures, problem-solving activities and creative processes as well as interactions with real life businesses. With readings and lectures, the students will be able to grasp the key issues whereas with case studies and discussions, they will find the opportunity to expand their perspectives and apply the theoretical knowledge to real life situations.
Homework and ProjectsThe students will be making one presentation as a group at the end of the course. The groups will be formed and the details of the projects will be announced later by the instructor. Each group will have maximum 5 members and each team member will present their part individually. Before the presentations, the group projects have to be submitted as a PPT file with a project report within a deadline provided by the instructor. Late assignments will not get full points.

Students are always free and encouraged to give feedback and ask questions about the course via e-mail to the instructor (soyers@mef.edu.tr). In this course, active participation is key to learning and applying, as for a topic like strategic information systems management, new ideas can be generated through questioning, brain storming and discussion. Thus the grading of the class participation will be done based on the quality of active student participation and contribution to in-class activities and pre-class work. Students are expected to attend all sessions and be in class on time. When they can not attend due to a sickness (which should require a report from a full facility hospital) or an excuse accepted by MEF regulations, they should inform the instructors by mail. As the feedback and questions are very valuable for making the course a distinctive learning experience, students may visit the instructors during office hours or send e mails, for any course related issues. Make-up exams will be subject to the Excuse Regulation (link: (https://students.mef.edu.tr/tr/mazeretlerin-kabulu-ve-mazeret-sinavlarinin-yapili#gsc.tab=0). Students are required to submit a request (together with their reports) to the faculty secretary within three (3) days of the exam via this link: https://www.cognitoforms.com/MEFUniversity/MazeretBildirimFormu). The requests are discussed with the faculty board and the decision taken by the faculty secretary is sent to the instructor. Once the student’s excuse is accepted, the instructor and the student will decide together to arrange the place and time. Academic dishonesty and plagiarism will be subject to the YÖK Disciplinary Regulation.
