Overall Educational Objective To be able to evaluate and discuss the theoretical and scientific bases of adult psychopathology in relation to the notion of “self” and to acquire the necessary knowledge for psychological research practice.
Course Description This course focuses on the role of the self in our understanding of psychological disorders and their treatment. Students will be familiarized with etiological models of various clinical disorders, and their conceptualizations as disorders of self in light of recent evidence-based treatment models. Throughout the course students will be expected to present research papers, lead discussions, and conduct research in a related topic of their interest. Regarding the research skills, students will formulate a research question, design a study, collect and analyze data, evaluate and present their findings, and produce a final research paper. At the end of the course, students will communicate their research findings orally in a poster presentation.
Course Description in Turkish Bu ders, psikolojik bozuklukları ve bunların tedavilerini anlamamızda benlik kavramının rolüne odaklanmaktadır. Öğrenciler, çeşitli klinik bozuklukların etiyolojik modellerini öğrenirken bunları kanıta dayalı tedavi yöntemleri ışığında bir de “kendilik bozuklukları” perspektifinden değerlendirmeyi öğreneceklerdir. Ders boyunca öğrencilerden araştırma makaleleri sunmaları, tartışmalara öncülük etmeleri ve ilgi duydukları bir konuda araştırma yapmaları beklenir. Araştırma becerileri kapsamında, öğrencilerden bir araştırma sorusu formüle etmeleri, bilimsel bir çalışma tasarlamaları, veri toplamaları, veriyi analiz etmeleri, bulgularını değerlendirmeleri ve nihai bir araştırma makalesi hazırlamaları beklenmektedir. Dersin sonunda öğrenciler araştırma bulgularını bir poster sunumu ile sözlü olarak ileteceklerdir.

The Self in Understanding and Treating Psychological Disorders. Cambridge University Press. There will be a set of required empirical articles and book chapters.
Teaching MethodsThis course will be taught entirely in the flipped format. Prior to each class, students will be provided a set of reading documents which involve book chapters and/or empirical articles pertinent to the topic of the week. Each week, a group of students will be responsible for the presentation of the topic, and leading the class discussions. Every student is expected to come to the class having read the material of the week. This entails that the student made the effort to understand the theorical background, and the methodology of the article, and prepared their questions for the upcoming class discussion. In class discussions, students will be evaluated based on their contributions. Additionally, for each week, there will be specific skills training and in-lab exercises (e.g., literature review, coding and analysis of the data) pertaining to the final research project.
Homework and ProjectsStudents will read research articles published in peer-review psychology journals, and actively participate in classroom discussions based on these readings. Each week, a group of students are required to present these articles to the class. Moreover, students are required to collect data, code and analyze it on SPSS and write an empirical article and present the results in a poster.
